AI Agents You Can Use Today: An October Update for Graduates

An AI agent doesn't just answer you. It takes a goal, works through the steps with real tools, and leaves something done. Here is what that means for a graduate in India in October 2026, and where you still need to stay in charge.

New to agents? Read our August explainer, AI Agents for Fresh Graduates, first. This piece is the hands-on follow-up: which agents you can actually use in India today, and how to use them safely.

You'll walk away with
  1. A one-line test to tell a real agent from a chatbot
  2. Five jobs you can hand an agent this week
  3. A 7-point safe agent checklist

Chatbot or Agent? The One-Line Test

Ask yourself: when it finishes, has anything actually changed? A chatbot leaves you with text. An agent leaves a booked slot, a filled form or a finished spreadsheet.

ChatbotAgent
You give itA questionA goal
It works withIts own knowledgeTools: a browser, your mail, calendar, files
It doesOne replyA chain of steps, checking each result

Example"How do I compare laptops under ₹60,000?""Compare five laptops under ₹60,000 for coding, put specs and prices in a sheet, and flag the best two."

Good agents pause before anything important, such as paying, sending an email in your name or deleting a file. That pause is a feature. Keep it switched on.

Watch out for "agent washing"

Many apps now call themselves agents when they are chatbots with a new label. Gartner estimates that only about 130 of the thousands of vendors selling "agentic AI" offer the real thing.[1]

Agents You Can Use Today, and What They Cost in India

Perplexity Comet is the free way in. Gemini Spark is the clearest paid agent available in India today. Check plans in the app before you pay, because these change month to month.

Don't go looking for Google's Project Mariner. It shut down in May 2026 and its features moved into Gemini.[7]

Five Jobs to Hand an Agent This Week

Start with tasks where a mistake costs you nothing and the result is easy to check.

  1. Placement-season tracker. Ask it to collect openings from company career pages into a sheet with role, location, deadline and link. You still read each listing and apply yourself.
  2. Research brief. "Find five recent sources on green hydrogen in India, summarise each in three lines, and list the links." Then open the links. Agents sometimes cite pages that don't say what they claim.
  3. Study plan. ChatGPT Study Mode and Gemini Guided Learning teach step by step with questions instead of handing over answers. Ask for a four-week plan for your weakest subject.
  4. Trip planning. Have it compare train and flight options, timings and fares for a home visit. The agent prepares; you book and pay. Google designed Spark to hand payment steps back to you.
  5. ITR paperwork checklist. Ask it to list the documents you'll need for your first return, such as Form 16, AIS and bank interest certificates, and to build a folder structure for them. Don't let it file the return or decide your tax position.
Try this brief for job 1
Goal: build a placement tracker for [your degree] graduate roles in [city]. Sources: only official company career pages and [job portal you use]. Output: a sheet with columns Company, Role, Location, Deadline, Link, Eligibility. Done means: at least 15 roles with deadlines after [date], sorted by deadline. Rules: do not apply, sign up or log in anywhere. Ask me before any step you are unsure about.

India's Story: Agents That Pay, Within Limits You Set

India is building agent payments on UPI spending limits, but the national rollout is on hold while NPCI works on safeguards. For now, assume you will approve every payment yourself.

WhenWhat happened
Sep 2026NPCI put its planned Unified Agent Protocol on hold before the Global Fintech Fest, pending regulatory clearance, Business Standard reported.[8]
Sep 2026NPCI's chairman said at the Fest that an agent may work out what you want, but approving the payment must stay with the payment system.[9]
Sep 2026India plans a registry to verify which AI agents may transact, Reuters reported, citing sources.[10]
Oct 2025Razorpay, NPCI and OpenAI ran a private pilot of payments inside ChatGPT using UPI Reserve Pay and UPI Circle, so the agent could only spend within your limit.[11]
What this means for you

A spending cap is the safety net. If you ever try an agent that can pay, set a small UPI limit first.

Where Agents Still Fail

Agents are useful but unreliable, so treat every result as a draft.

  • Inconsistent. In a 2026 study, a strong agent solved about 78% of tasks at least once in ten tries, but only about 36% every time. Vague instructions were a major cause.[12]
  • Easy to trick. Hidden text on a webpage or in an email can instruct an agent to leak your data. This is called prompt injection, and Brave demonstrated it on Perplexity Comet in 2025.[13]
  • Privacy-hungry. Agents take screenshots, keep browsing history and use your logins. Microsoft keeps Edge agent screenshots for up to 30 days unless you delete the conversation.[6]
  • Costly. Agent tasks use up your plan's allowance much faster than chat, and the strongest features sit in paid tiers.
  • Overhyped at work. Gartner predicts over 40% of company agent projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027.[14]

The Safe Agent Checklist

Run through these seven before you hand an agent anything. Tick them as you go.

Your Career Angle: Become the AI Supervisor

The skill employers want is not "using AI" but directing it and checking its work. Indian professionals are already ahead here, according to Microsoft's Work Trend Index 2026 India findings:[16]

32%

of Indian AI users already use agents for multi-step work, double the global 16%.

87%

treat AI output as a starting point, not a final answer.

63%

rank quality control of AI output as a top skill, against 50% globally.

So practise the supervisor's habits: write a clear brief, review the steps, catch the error, and own the final result. If you are in tech, learn a coding agent such as Codex or Claude Code. Either way, the person who checks the agent's work is the person who gets trusted with more.

Author's note: In audit, we never sign off on work we haven't reviewed, however good the junior who prepared it. Treat an agent the same way. Let it prepare; you review, and you sign.
