Why generic cover letters get filtered out in the first 10 seconds
A hiring manager reading 200 applications isn't reading carefully — they're scanning for one thing: does this letter prove the person actually looked at this specific role, or did they paste the same letter everywhere? Any sentence that could apply to any company at all ("I am a hardworking and dedicated professional...") signals the second option immediately, and the letter gets skimmed rather than read.
The one-story structure
Instead of listing qualities, a cover letter that works picks one concrete moment and builds the whole letter around it. For example: not "I have strong leadership skills," but a specific paragraph describing the time you led a project, what went wrong, and what you did about it. One well-told story does more work than five adjectives.
A real example
"During my final year project, our data source failed two weeks before submission. I spent a weekend rebuilding our dataset from public records instead of asking for a deadline extension, and we submitted on time with a stronger analysis than our original plan." — that's one sentence of context and it tells a recruiter more about how you work under pressure than any adjective could.
What to change every single time
The opening line and the closing paragraph should reference something specific to that company — a product, a recent announcement, a specific team you'd be joining. If you can copy-paste your opening line into an application for a completely different company and it still makes sense, rewrite it.
