Why most study plans fail — and the two principles that actually work
A study plan that just blocks out hours ("9–11am: Physics") tends to collapse within a week, because it doesn't account for how memory actually works. Two evidence-backed principles fix most of this.
Spaced repetition
Reviewing material once and moving on is the least efficient way to retain it. Revisiting a topic at increasing intervals — day 1, day 3, day 7, day 14 — takes less total time than cramming and produces dramatically better retention. A good plan schedules short review sessions of old material alongside new material, not just forward progress.
Realistic daily time-blocking
Most plans overestimate focused study time. Two hours of genuinely focused study beats four hours of distracted study, and planning for the former is more sustainable than planning for the latter and failing at it. Build in explicit breaks (25–50 minutes on, 5–10 off) rather than assuming continuous focus.
What to actually track
Not just "hours studied," but what you can recall without looking at notes, checked a few days later. If you can't recall it, that topic needs another spaced-repetition cycle, not more hours added to the original session. This is the difference between a plan that produces exam-ready recall and one that just produces the feeling of having studied.
